Moxibustion

Moxibustion is a traditional Asian therapy that uses warmth to stimulate acupuncture points and meridians. The warmth comes from moxa, a special preparation of dried, aged leaves of mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris).

The mugwort is dried and aged, then worked into a soft, fine wool. Robert burns a tiny amount of it near specific points on the body.

How it feels

Most people feel a gentle, sustained warmth that spreads into the area being treated. Moxa should never feel painfully hot. Tell Robert straight away if it does, and he will adjust it.

Moxa has a distinctive herbal smell while it burns.

What it is used for

Moxibustion is traditionally used for joint pain, fatigue and low vitality, and for aches that feel cold or stiff. Robert often uses it in the same visit as acupuncture, when your pattern calls for warmth.

Before your visit

Let Robert know if you are pregnant, or if you have reduced feeling in your skin, for example from diabetes or neuropathy. He will take that into account when deciding whether and where to use moxa.

Often used alongside moxibustion

  • Japanese acupuncture: very fine needles and gentle contact, in the Toyohari style.
  • Herbal medicine: Chinese herbal formulas and European remedies to support your treatment between visits.

Questions? Ask Robert.

He’ll tell you plainly whether acupuncture is likely to help. Sees patients Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, by appointment.
